The objective of Alpha Xi Delta’s Academic Achievement program is to aid women in the pursuit of academic goals and the realization of scholastic potentials. On a national level Alpha Xi Delta works individually with each chapter to help them develop an Academic Achievement Program that works best with each specific chapter. Although they do provide an outline and certain requirements for each chapter, the academic achievement program developed for WVU’s chapter is unique to the Iota chapter specifically.
As Academic Achievement Chair, I, Lauren Bakos, strive to keep all women in the sorority above the required 2.5 GPA. At the beginning of each semester I sit down with any members that may be falling behind academically and set individual goals with them. Throughout the semester we meet once more to make sure they stay on track with their plan. An Academic Achievement Committee has also been put in place to run study hours and encourage group studying among the sisters. I have found that girls become extremely close to one another once they find that they share common interests academically. I also hand out gift cards throughout the semester for our “Smarty Pants” of the week. This is a woman who has shown outstanding academic achievements in the recent past. There is also a faculty and Dean’s list brunch held every semester where women have a chance to invite a faculty member they are particularly close with into the Alpha Xi Delta house for a brunch with other members on the Dean’s and President’s list. As a chapter we love rewarding girls with good grades and encouraging others to achieve new goals scholastically.
